Dressmaker fabrics and tags
- Dressmaker has 450+ fabrics, including cotton, linen, wool, silk, velvet and brocade.
- Each fabric carries tags: material, colour temperature (Cool or Warm) and style tags.
- Fabric is sold by the metre at the International Emporium; accessories are sold per piece.
- Preview tags in the sketchbook with swatches before buying.
Fabric is where most of a dress’s personality comes from. In Dressmaker it also decides most of your tags, the numbers customers check against their brief.
Fabric types
The Steam page lists cotton, linen, wool, silk and velvet, and the shop screenshots also show brocades and patterned prints. The developers wrote custom shaders so that silks and velvets shine differently, and they mention other niche materials such as sequins. The launch game has over 450 fabrics.
How tags work
Every fabric in the shop lists its tags. Taking two fabrics from the official screenshots:

Tags fall into a few families:
- Material: Silk, Velvet, Cotton, Linen and so on.
- Colour: the colour name (Pink) plus Cool or Warm.
- Style: Elegant, Formal, Glamour, Simple, Romantic, Cute, Playful, Professional, Elaborate.
- Pattern and motif: Patterned, Flowers.
- Occasion: Daywear, Eveningwear.
Some tags show a value in the shop, for example Simple 100 and Formal 100 on Dusty Pink Silk. How fabric tags combine into the totals on your brief is not documented yet. The reliable method is to swatch fabrics in the sketchbook and read the preview.
Buying fabric without waste
- The sketchbook estimates how many metres a design needs. Buy that, plus a small margin while you are learning to cut.
- The shop has a metre slider. The price shown is for the whole length you select (in the screenshots, 2 m of Blush Pink Velvet is 60 coin).
- Fabric you own is listed in your inventory with the metres left, so a versatile neutral is rarely wasted.
- Remember the budget line on the brief. Accessories count as well.
Accessories and tags
Accessories carry tags too. A silk flower carries Flowers, for example. When a brief asks for a tag your fabric cannot reach, accessories are usually the cheapest way to close the gap. The game has over 350 accessories, including buttons, bows, appliqué and lace trims.
